This Resource Book is great for:
· Phonics: Write vocabulary words on index cards and sort by beginning sound, ending sound, number of vowels, number of letters, number of syllables, short vowel sounds and long vowel sounds. Practice word sounds with the child and ask: How many sounds do you hear in this word? example: /b/ /a/ /l/ - the word is ball, found on page 15.
· Alphabetize: Use cards above and have child alphabetize them.
Have child write names from different lists alphabetically and read them out loud.
Advanced/Challenge Activity: Choose the first word from several lists on one page or two pages - opened face to face ,
and have child alphabetize words beginning with the same letter of the alphabet.
· Identifying High Frequency Words: Have child read the words out loud and spell each word out loud. Write the word on separate paper looking at the word at first then as the reading improves, have child spell and write the word without looking in the book.
· Playing I Spy: Read a word on a page and say: “I spy…” (say word out loud). Have the child find the word. Repeat the word slowly making emphasis on the beginning and ending sounds until the child finds the word. Use variations by using the words “hot” or “cold” to guide the child. Increase the level of difficulty by including the page number or using the table of contents on the search.

Using magnetized letters, choose the letters that make up the word, shuffle the letters and demonstrate
to student how to place the word back in order. Shuffle the letters again and allow the child to work on his/her own.
